Michael Jackson – One Day In Your Life

one day in your life

27th June 1981 for two weeks

As I type this I am listening to this. It’s another song that would have been perfect for the later night love hour on the radio. The teenagers of 1981 must have been horny.

I have heard it once or twice but it’s a Michael Jackson record that I can’t recall clearly. I have probably heard it very little over the years.

Just like Smokey Robinson last time, it’s just a nice record. That’s it. It’s a song I will forget hearing within minutes.

There are better Michael Jackson songs that I will write about in the future.

Smokey Robinson – Being With You

being with you

13th June 1981 for two weeks

Another Morrisons tune. I remember hearing it many times over the tannoy back when I worked there. I honestly thought it was a woman’s voice on the record.

It’s a nice record. That’s the best word I can find to describe it – nice.

It was the perfect record for the ‘late night love hour’ that would be on the radio in the Nineties and Noughties.

The Odyssey – Use It Up And Wear It Out

use it up and wear it out

26th July 1980 for two weeks

The name wasn’t familiar when I started to write this. But as I listened I recall hearing it quite a bit over the years. I guess I just didn’t know the name.

It’s a great record. It’s almost ahead of its time with the bassline and riff.

It’s a bit boo-be-do towards the end which feels unnecessary and lets it down. I guess the band didn’t know how cool the tune could have been.

Johnny Logan – What’s Another Year

What's Another Year

17th May 1980 for two weeks

In 1980 this was the winning song from the Eurovision Song Contest. Ireland’s entry was a power ballad. It has the sort of sound that would later become typical of female power balladeers later in the decade. The backing remind be a little of the theme tune of Cheers.

It’s not a dreadful record but one that I wound never choose to listen to. It’s a million miles away from the style of song you’d associate with Eurovision.

Dr Hook – When You’re In Love With A Beautiful Woman

when you're in love with a beautiful woman

17th November 1979 for three weeks

Judging by the single cover picture I doubt that any of these guys were real doctors.

When You’re In Love With a Beautiful Woman is a nice song. It’s so nice that its the sort of song you hear a lot on supermarket tannoys. It was definitely a Morrisons song and I heard it regularly when I worked there.

How does it hold up in 2019. It’s not too bad. I wouldn’t choose to listen to it but then I wouldn’t switch it off if it came on.
